Railway Works: Construction Techniques, Consolidation, and Coordination with Live Railway Operations

The construction of railway works, particularly those involving active railway lines, is a highly critical field due to the challenges associated with coordinating work around live railway operations and implementing methods to minimise resulting impacts. Focus is placed on structures such as tunnels and operational railway infrastructure. In terms of new civil constructions, the main activities include the construction of road and railway bridges, sub-track structures, buildings and associated installations, as well as retaining structures and slope stabilisation for landslide-prone areas. Additional areas of work encompass slope restoration and protection, riverbank protection, and hydraulic regulation.

Regarding existing structures, interventions focus on structural strengthening, structural upgrading, and the restoration of functionality for reinforced concrete and masonry structures, such as bridges, retaining structures, and underground facilities. The techniques employed range from resin and cementitious mortar injections (following the removal of deteriorated parts) to deep foundations using soil nailing, micropiles, tie rods, and foundation piles. Additionally, ground improvement systems such as jetting and jet grouting are applied, alongside groundwater control measures using well-point systems during construction phases.
